In a career that lasted more than half a century, Tom Wolfe wrote fiction and nonfiction best-sellers including The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test and The Bonfire of the Vanities. Along the way, he created a new type of journalism and coined phrases that became part of the American vocabulary.
Wolfe began working as a newspaper reporter, first for The Washington Post, then the New York Herald Tribune. He developed a literary style in nonfiction that became known as the “New Journalism.” “I’ve always agreed on a theoretical level that the techniques for fiction and nonfiction are interchangeable,” he said. “The things that work in nonfiction would work in fiction, and vice versa.”
“When Tom Wolfe’s voice broke into the world of nonfiction, it was a time when a lot of writers, and a lot of artists in general, were turning inwards,” says Lev Grossman, book critic for Time magazine. “Wolfe didn’t do that. Wolfe turned outwards. He was a guy who was interested in other people.” Wolfe was interested in how they thought, how they did things and how the things they did affected the world around them.
In 1979, Wolfe published The Right Stuff, an account of the military test pilots who became America’s first astronauts. Four years later, the book was adapted as a feature film. “The Right Stuff was the book for me,” says Grossman. “It reminded me, in case I’d forgotten, that the world is an incredible place.”
In The Right Stuff, Wolfe popularized the phrase “pushing the envelope.” In a New York magazine article, Wolfe described the 1970s as “The ‘Me’ Decade.” Grossman says these phrases became part of the American idiom because they were accurate.
“He was an enormously forceful observer, and he was not afraid of making strong claims about what was happening in reality,” Grossman says. “He did it well and people heard him. And they repeated what he said because he was right.” All those words started a revolution in nonfiction that is still going on.

Most of us still have lots of photographs sitting around from the days when we used cameras, not telephones, to take pictures. There are probably many photos that we do not look at and may never see again. But these images, representing memories from our past, do not have to be lost. Google has created a tool to help bring these forgotten pictures back to life in very high quality.
The PhotoScan app works the same as an image scanner. But this software program uses the camera on your phone to capture(捕捉) images as digital copies, which is a quick and easy way to save old photos without having to spend money on new equipment. The PhotoScan app uses new technology to improve the capturing process, which makes it possible to take a picture of a photo with a camera phone, without glare, a common problem.
After opening the app, the user first puts the desired photo within the camera’s frame. When this is done, four small circles appear in different places over the photo. The user then moves the phone over each of the circles, which change color after the process completes. That’s it! The app finds the edges of the photo, straightens the image, and puts it in the right position while removing glare. From this point, the pictures can easily be saved to the Google Photos app or somewhere else. If you do have Google Photos, images are organized by face or place and can easily be found.
The release of PhotoScan came at the same time as some changes to theGoogle Photos app. One change is an improved auto tool that Google says creates high-quality effects in just one step. Another tool lets users choose from12 different looks to improve overall photo quality. The third provides high-level controls for changing light and colors.
Anil Sabharwal, the Vice President of Google Photos, explained why he created PhotoScan. In 1947, his parents lived under British colonial rule in India and were ordered to leave their home with only a few belongings. They decided to leave behind jewelry and other valuables, but gathered up as many photos as they could take.
28. What can we know about the PhotoScan app?
A. It is new equipment used to scan images.
B. It can adjust the angle of cameras by moving four small circles.
C. Users can use it to take digital photos.
D. Using it to photograph pictures won’t have glare.
29. What is the advantage of Google Photos according to the passage?
A. It provides various styles that users can select from to improve the apps.
B. Users can easily find the desired picture through the photographing place.
C. The changed storage space is bigger than before.
D. It stores most pictures captured by PhotoScan.
30. What can we infer about Anil Sabharwal from the last paragraph?
A. He got the idea for PhotoScan from his family’s experiences.
B. His parents helped him a lot while in India.
C. British colonial rule forced him to make PhotoScan.
D. His family’s poverty promoted him to create PhotoScan.
31. The purpose of the passage is to _______________.
A. persuade us to use the PhotoScan app
B. tell us a new Google app brings old photographs back to life
C. remind us of the pictures representing memories from our past
D. offer some suggestions for Google to improve its new app

The college years should be a period for important advancement in autonomy(自主性) and the development of adult identity. Yet, now they are becoming an extended time of adolescence, during which many of today’s students are not shouldered with adult responsibilities.
For previous generations, college was decisive break from parental control; guidance and support needed help from people of the same age and from within. In the past two decades, however, continued connection with and dependence on family, thanks to cellphones, email and social media, have increased significantly. Some parents go so far as to help with coursework. Instead of promoting the idea of college as a passagefrom the shelter of the family to autonomy and adult responsibility, universities have given in to the idea that they should provide the same environment as that of the home.
To prepare for increased autonomy and responsibility, college needs to be a time of exploration and experimentation. This process involves “trying on” new ways of thinking about oneself both intellectually and personally. While we should provide “safe spaces” within colleges, we must also make it safe to express opinions and challenge majority views. Intellectual growth and flexibility are developed on debate and questioning.
Learning to deal with the social world is equally important. Because a college community differs from the family, many students will struggle to find a sense of belonging. If students rely on administrators(管理者) to regulate their social behavior and thinking pattern, they are not facing the challenge of finding an identity within a larger and complex community.
Moreover, the tendency for universities to monitor and shape student behavior runs up against another characteristic of young adults: the response to being controlled by their elders. If acceptable social behavior is too strictly defined and controlled, the insensitive or aggressive behavior that administrators are seeking to minimize may actually be encouraged.
It is not surprising that young people are likely to burst out, particularly when there are reasons to do so. Our generation once joined hands and stood firm at times of national emergency. What is lacking today is the conflict between adolescent’s desire for autonomy and their understanding of an unsafe world. Therefore, there is the desire for their dorms to be replacement homes and not places to experience intellectual growth.
Every college discussion about community values, social climate and behavior should include recognition of the developmental importance of student autonomy and self-regulation, of the necessary tension between safety and self-discovery.
32. What’s the author’s attitude toward continued parental guidance to college students?
A. Sympathetic B. Disapproving C.Supportive D.Neutral
33. The underlined word “passage” in Paragraph 2 means.
A.change B.choice C.text D.extension
34. According to the author, what role should college play?
A.to develop a shared identity among students
B.to define and regulate students’ social behavior
C.To provide a safe world without tension for students
D.To cultivate students’ intellectual and personal development
35. Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage?
I :introduction. P: point. Sp: sub-point (次要点) C: Conclusion
