In April, Jackline Oyamo, 31, was laid off from her job as an electronic sales assistant at a shop in Kibera, one of the world’s largest slums (贫民窟) of Nairobi, Kenya. The measures to control the COVID-19 pandemic(流行病) meant fewer customers and staff cutbacks. “After losing my job, it was extremely difficult to keep feeding myself after I exhausted my small savings,” she says.
But Oyamo is able to get fresh produce for free from Victor Edalia, a 30-year-old urban farmer in her neighborhood. Last November, Edalia, who works as a driver by day, changed a trash dump site in the slum into an urban garden. He signed an agreement with a local chief to use the land. Now, the plot, about a quarter of an acre, grows vegetables such as tomatoes, onions and spinach.
Edalia originally started the farm to increase his income. The idea was to sell vegetables to hotels. But once the pandemic hit, he changed the plan. He wanted to find a way to “give back,” he says.
So throughout the pandemic, Edalia has been providing free supplies of vegetables to 10 needy families and individuals in Kibera. They include young people who lost their jobs in the pandemic, like Oyamo, as well as single mothers and families with households of more than seven people. They can drop by the farm up to three times a week to pick up a supply of vegetables.
Moses Omondi, team leader of Adopt a Family, a local nonprofit that’s been providing dry food donations like maize flour to 500 families in Kibera, thinks Edalia’s program is promising. “I think it’s a pretty smart approach,” he says. “In addition to supporting struggling families during these tough times that face starvation while at home, it helps to reduce anxiety and helplessness of a Kibera family.”
24. What happened to Oyamo in April?
A. She had a very hard time after losing her job. B. She sold electronic products to get enough food.

With the average American going through more than 700 pounds of paper per year, many firms are looking for ways to discourage their employees from overusing the office printer.
Toshiba America Business Solutions has come up with an alternative idea. It has introduced the eSTUDIO4508LP, a printer that gives users the option to print with erasable toner (墨粉) — allowing a single piece of paper to be reused several times.
To reuse a piece of paper, the printer basically uses the same process as a normal printer, but in reverse (反过来), said Bill Melo, chief marketing executive for Toshiba America Business Solutions. Paper printed with the erasable toner is fed back into the printer, superheated, and the toner gets removed and put in a discard (丢弃) tank.
There are a couple of catches. All of the printouts using the erasable toner have to be in blue ink, which is the only color in which erasable toner is now available. And the company said that people may want to stop reusing the printouts after five times through the eraser because small traces of erased text will build up over time.
The $15,420 printer is aimed at offices and schools, where there are often large numbers of printouts that outlive their usefulness quickly. With the erasable toner, it's possible to load any shortlived handouts back onto the printer to be erased and then reused.
Still, convincing customers to commit to erasable toner isn't always easy. Melo said not all its customers were happy about only having the erasable option.
The model, Melo said, should better serve the needs of those who want to be environmentally conscious but also may need something more permanent on occasion.
28.What's special about Toshiba's printer?
A.It's lowpriced. B.It's fashionable. C.It's lightweight. D.It's ecofriendly.
29.What's the key to making the printer work?
A.A discard tank. B.Light colored ink. C.Special writing paper. D.A high enough temperature.
30.What does the underlined word “catches” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Theories. B.Problems. C.Differences. D.Characteristics.
31.How did the public respond to the printer?
A.They asked for more patterns. B.Some expressed dissatisfaction.
C.Some worried about its recycling. D.They considered it hard to operate.

Balancing preservation of the land with our desire to travel is a challenge for us travelers. When seeing cities face constant resource and waste problems, I couldn’t help but think about how much travel can affect the environment.
Back in my youth, I was an environmental activist. But over the years, I leave the lights on. I fly a lot. I drink out of plastic bottles. I eat a lot of meat. And I love fish, especially tuna. However, recently, I’ve begun thinking harder about how travel affects the environment and how I affect the environment. In doing so, I’ve tried to be a lot more aware of my actions.
I don’t know if there is an easy solution for this problem. The most environmentally friendly activity is not to travel at all, but that’s unrealistic and too extreme. There’s so much money in travel that I don’t think the government and regulation can do much. Only when their profits are hurt will hotels, operators, and the industry as a whole begin to listen. Instead, it’s all about the consumers. The only good way is to get people to be more environmentally conscious and make better decisions.
Consumers have a lot of power. Why did Wal-Mart start selling only sustainable fish and whole milk? Consumers wanted it. I think if we as travelers begin to demand more environmentally friendly practices and avoid companies with poor environmental records, we can change things.
Now, I recycle more, I use fewer water bottles, I shut off the lights, Most importantly, I use operators and stay at places that are reducing their environmental impact.
Travel can destroy the environment but it doesn’t have to. We have the power to make things better. We can do small things and demand more of the places we stay and visit. We can and should demand more of places, and of ourselves.
32.Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
A.My experiences of protecting the environment. B.Can we balance travel and the environment?
C.Is there an easy way to solve environmental problems? D.How can we travel in an environmentally friendly way?
33.Why does the writer list his actions over the years?
A.To show he is wealthy. B.To tell he is fond of travelling.
C.To indicate he has become less environmentally conscious. D.To explain his hobby.
34.What’s the realistic way to solve the problem according to paragraph 3?
A.People do not travel at all. B.The government takes effective measures.
C.Tourism industry follows environmental rules. D.Consumers become more environmentally conscious.
35.What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A.Travel will surely destroy the environment.
B.Few things travelers can do to protect the environment.
C.We can get a lot from the places we travel.
D.What travelers do can make a difference to the environment.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.
Why have you been so successful in reaching some of your goals, but not others? If you aren't sure, you are far from alone in your confusion. It turns out that even brilliant, highly accomplished people are pretty lousy when it comes to understanding why they succeed or fail. The intuitive answer — that you are born predisposed to certain talents and lacking in others — is really just one small piece of the puzzle. In fact, decades of research on achievement suggests that successful people reach their goals not simply because of who they are, but more often because of what they do. 36
1. Get specific. When you set yourself a goal, try to be as specific as possible. "Lose 5 pounds" is a better goal than "lose some weight," because it gives you a clear idea of what success looks like. 37 Also, think about the specific actions that need to be taken to reach your goal.
2. 38
Given how busy most of us are, and how many goals we are juggling at once, it's not surprising that we routinely miss opportunities to act on a goal because we simply fail to notice them. Did you really have no time to work out today? No chance at any point to return that phone call? Achieving your goal means grabbing hold of these opportunities before they slip through your fingers.
3. Know exactly how far you have left to go.
Achieving any goal also requires honest and regular monitoring of your progress — if not by others, then by you yourself. If you don't know how well you are doing, you can't adjust your behavior or your strategies accordingly. 39
It is my hope that, after reading about the nine things successful people do differently, you have gained some insight into all the things you have been doing right all along. Remember: 40 . It's never what you are, but what you do.
A. Wait for opportunities to appear
B. Seize the moment to act on your goals
C. Here are things successful people do differently
D. Next I’ll talk about my own experience on how to achieve success
E. You don’t need to become a different person to become a more successful one
F. Check your progress frequently-weekly, or even daily, depending on the goal
G. Knowing exactly what you want to achieve keeps you motivated until you get there

I was going home by bike in a cold afternoon when my bike broke down. As I was wondering how to do, an old man came over. He offered to help me and soon my bike repaired. I thanked him but asked how to reward him. She shook his head and then told me a story about how a boy had helped him two year before. His story moved me deep. I looked at the man, with my eyes filling with tears. I never thought he could keep such a little incident in the mind for years. Only then do I begin to believe that one good turn deserves another.
